HORSE MOUTH
A little about me..
My name is Bethany Wales and I’m a third year performance student at Northumbria University.
I have a background in performing, preceding my degree by studying a Btec National diploma in acting. I have performed as part of Twenty Two Shoes Theatre, where I had the chance to tour schools and colleges with devised work. I also performed with Far East Theatre Company, performing two large scale Shakespeare productions and touring adapted versions of the pieces as promenade performances.
When I first started the course, my main area of interest was performing; however through modules such as devising, facilitation and film and TV I have become more confident in creating work and managing projects. I have become increasingly interested in this side of theatre and film, and have used Garden of Eva as a chance to develop my knowledge of writing work, as well as to push myself in an organisational role.
I have been interested in making films for as long as I can remember, and have a passion for investigative journalism. This professional Directions module has been the ideal opportunity to explore these two avenues, finding ways to link the two together in a creative way. As well as making work, I am interested in challenging standards set by society, and believe that as an artist it is important to ask questions about the way we live in order to bring about positive change. I am a huge fan of the Vice network, taking inspiration from their philosophy of questioning boundaries with excellent journalism and film making. In this vein I am looking to expand this current project beyond my Professional Directions module, with new film ideas looking at student cannabis culture, dissociative disorders and low aspiration levels in rural communities. Over the summer I will be turning the script for Garden of Eva into a finished film, which I hope to submit for student film festivals such as Watersprite and Norwich film festival.
My biggest challenge on this project has been organisation, and this website serves as a way of contextualising and explaining my progress throughout this term. My blog follows my thoughts on what I have been doing, and I hope that its layout will go some way to bringing some order to my artisitc process.
